Moonlands by Baro Moonlands by Baro
Been busy because i had exams in febuary. But since those are over and i have 5 weeks (4 left) off uni i can finally relax and also do some artwork without beeing under stress :D. So this is what i've been working on.

The asteroids where rendered in 3dmax and edited in photoshop.
And since my last piece [link] didn't have a printable resolution i worked on a rather high one on this one, so there's also a print available.

You are viewing this at 25% of the original scale.

Hope you like it. Full view is a must!

Thank you to *DKF and *SamODJ for critique and helpfull comments.

EDIT: minor color correction and some editing on the those lines within the ray of the sun.

This is another excellent rendition of space art that you have created. Aside from the amazing perspective and detail placed in the planets and asteroids, I have to also compliment you on your use of solar lighting in the picture. All of these elements give the picture an amazing atmospheric feeling that few images give. An excellent achievement overall.

Whilst simple, the work seems to command alot of attention with the craters as its niche; still, it seems that more could have been pushed both conceptually and compositionally.

Simply inspiring. Your work is indeed encouraging to me. Love the color scheme and the all the great detail. This is not a request for a tutorial but dang I wanna know how you did those craters. That's just awesomeness all around.

yea I agree with 19-10.. the planet looks really good.. the craters are some of the best Ive seen.. did you paint them in later? but the asteroids could be better indeed

sry i mean, what's disturbing you with the asteroids :P.

:p well they arent placed very well.. they are just all over the place.. but maybe thats my composition obsession.. and they dont add a lot of scale.. there arent that many smaller ones so it decreses the scale of the planet leaving a scene that looks very small.. witch is a shame I think;)

the actual goal was to make the asteroids look random yet still conserve some cind of order. i think i could call myself obsessed with composition aswell, so if you look closely you'll find that the bigger asteroids draw an oval line from the bottom right to the top left. only the smaller ones are spread accross most of the image. so maybe you're right about there being too little small ones to increase the depth, but then again you say they make the field look to random and without order. so essentially it's all about the balance. i cinda wanted to get away from those perfectly formed asteroid belts and fields. not that i don't like such pictures but i wanted to try something a little different. of course it's totally subjective if you like or dislike it.

I totally agree with you on the perfectly formed asteroid belts thing:P and yea I noticed the oval line in it.. but hmm I guess this is just a matter of personal taste. Anyways it's still a great pic haha!

what's dsturbing you with the craters? yes the craters where layed ontop of the planet texture, which i tried to make look very subtle, so that the craters would stand out.

i find, it's difficult to capture the image as a whole with too high resolutions. is it really that small?

thx for the comment :)

well it's pretty small on my monitor. I find most your stuff is quite small. Which is totally understandable, i'm sure it fits well on most monitors. But then look at DKF's stuff: [link]

He always uses really high resolutions, and i find i can get sucked in.

Besides, the DA light-green BG doesn't do wonders to space art ;)

I've submitted things with huge black frames so that you don't see the DA black, but that seems to make it so people really don't like it (everyone hates horizontal scroll bars....)

Yup, the craters are really nice. Did you paint them one before or after spherizing or both perhaps?
Just curious :)
So yeah, the planet is sick. I'm not too sure about those asteroids really. Maybe they need some more texture. I don't know
Good work !

yeah the asteroids where very tricky, but without them the picture looks too empty, plus i think they complement the sorrounding pretty nicely, cause you'd probably expect some asteroids to be flying around near a planet with so many craters.
