This is my submission to the Terraspace Contest by [link]. Go give them a visit and a watch!
I tried one or two new things in this one, so i dare say it isn't all perfection, but still one of the best terraspace projects i have done up to now. I wanted a real panorama view in this one so i stiched the landscape together out of three terragen renders, go check the walkthrough [link] if you like. The view is not adjusted to the the gravity of the planet in whichs atmosphere you are, but in relation to the whole composition, that is why the horizon is tilted. I feel this way the planets, landscape, sky and space become equal elements. The final product here reminds me of one of caspar david friedrichs paintings, of course not at such a high level and with less symbolism, but you can recognize the three zones, which are very typical for one of his paintings. Now please don't think I'm putting myself on a pedestal with such a great artist... O_o Hmm whats left to say? Definitely go check out the other submissions. Full View! Comments and cya around... *EDIT: New Frame / Minor Edit on: Cracks, Landscape, Tornado and Protagonist* |

Good work on stitching the renders together, looks like one big render
I'm not to keen on the tornado but nonetheless it matches the vibe of the piece.

The planets and ring are also very nice, great texture on the planet and realistic looking ring
And as a contradiction against some other artists who commented here, I kinda like the tornado, although I could be improved

The details are also important, and add an extra depth when searching for further scenery in the darkness (such as the smoke rising up in front of the planetary rings).
This said, I feel that it could be further enhanced. For instance, let's begin with the foreground - some of the painted, jutting terrain seems to be purely black, with little/no light affecting it, this is great for the atmosphere - as long as it has that ever so slight grey haze enhancing the depth. I feel that the terrain jutting to the left seems to be oddly darker than the rest of the scene. Additionally, the persons figure seems oddly blurred when compared to the sharp surroundings.
The lava vents/planets are an impressive additions - excellent texture work. I think you could really make this shine with a bit more work on the lava though, for instance, giving it a real glow, after all, such huge cracks are sure to be leaking a lot of heat, wouldn't this light up the atmosphere a bit at least? It would look great with some radiance around it in this respect, especially on the dark sides! Quite a sight it would be (although you'd have to still consider it not interfering with the composition).
I find the ring to be both well crafted and distracting - I place this on the colour, it may just be to me, but I think it would look better as plain and white - like real asteroids (at least, most asteroids), the neutral colouration would perhaps be less distracting while still remaining a nice feature.
This said, it's a nice piece, an improved feel to a dark and gloomy scene - a common scene with unique features, jutting terrain, multiple large planets, lava vents/cracks, and minimalism with great detail - done right. Good work.
